April
4th Foundation Carries On Dr. King’s Beloved Community
The realization came rather quickly to
Johnson E. Saulsberry, Jr., founder of the April 4th Foundation,
Inc.: the Foundation’s purpose and goal
should be not only to honor the legacy and life’s work of Dr. King but to
continue his work through the youth of the Beloved Community.
So the Foundation adopted the mantra: “Tell The Story…Pass It Own”.
The
Foundation’s thrust then became that of developing a program that would
accomplish this goal. The result
is, “Footsteps, Tell The Story …Pass It On”. “Footsteps” will be a two-week summer
study program aimed at high school juniors and seniors as a supplementary
component to their traditional school curriculum. The program will be used as a tool to develop
the student’s leadership potential by empowering each student with the knowledge
of the historical persons, events and sacrifices that passed before to make
their present situation in the society possible.
The Foundation felt that in honor of Dr.
King and his Beloved Community that this year, the 40th anniversary
of his assassination, would be the time to announce the start of the ”Footsteps” program. Because of the representation and
participation by the many youth organizations in this year’s April 4th
commemorative events, the announcement will serve to continue to strengthen Dr.
Martin Luther King’s Beloved Community.
